How Essential Oils Support the Detox Process in the Body

Our health can be negatively affected by the pressures of our lifestyle, an unclean environment and emotional stress. Aromatherapists and other complementary therapists believe that this results in an overload of toxins in our body which compromise health and increase the risk of infection and disease

Essential oils are effective in supporting tissue repair, strengthening the immune system and stimulating the organs to support the elimination of toxins via the liver, colon, lymph, skin, and kidneys.

There are several essential oils which can be used as part of a detox process for health and wellbeing

• Citrus oils such as grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime and mandarin are beneficial to improve the detox function of the  liver by stimulating it – note any substance ingested will stimulate the liver to do its work (even poisons such as  alcohol) but it is believed that citrus oils do it more efficiently and in a pure and natural way that supports general health and wellbeing.

Orange in particular is believed to stimulate white blood cells to defend the body against infection i.e. improve the immune system which adds strength to the body’s natural detox process

Grapefruit is popular to stimulate the detoxing of the digestive system and skin, in particular where the client has overused alcohol or junk food.

Like other citrus fruits already mentioned, mandarin essential oil can help your body’s natural detoxification process by stimulating the liver. It is believed to stimulate bile production and help the body to break down fat. I recommend it blended with Lavender and May Chang oil for a highly therapeutic bath before bed enabling the body to detox over night whilst enjoying a good nights sleep.

Cedarwood is intensely relaxing and positively influences the strength and courage aspects psyche regulating cravings for unhealthy food and drink which increases the toxic load on the body.

Geranium  is believed to have a tonic effect on the liver and kidneys. It helps the body to eliminate fluids more efficiently, thereby helping the lymphatic system to detox.

Palmarosa is an oil used on a spiritual level to detox negative atmospheres and restore a sense of optimism within a healthy work or home space.

Patchouli – This highly feminine oil used in conjunction with massage is believed to stimulate the lymph system thus speeding elimination of toxins and supporting the body’s own defenses. It has a powerful stress reliving action which in itself can support the detox process and improve health and wellbeing.

May Chang (the oil of tranquility) is an oil that I often recommend within detox blends. It has a calming effect on the mind switching off mental chatter which is so often a symptom of stress overload which is in itself toxic to the mind and body.

Juniper is a diuretic which is believed to support elimination and improve skin conditions which may respond to detox solutions such as cellulite and acne.

Most high quality therapeutic grade essential oils certainly those expertly selected by Julie Foster have a positive effect on the systems of the body and can be considered as part of a health and wellbeing regime of which detox is a critical process.
